| Welcome Guard fans to the first in a series of weekly behind the scenes blogs about the show from the perspective of the story department. It's important to note that it's being posted immediately following the episode's airing so there's a definite SPOILER ALERT to each entry. I should probably also say that the views expressed are those of the author (me) and do not necessarily reflect others involved with the production, Halifax Film, Canwest, blah, blah, blah.
I should start with some quick set up. My title on the series is "Senior Creative Consultant" which is basically a fancy way of saying staff writer who assists the showrunner (Raymond Storey) with whatever task he tells me to do. In series television the showrunner is responsible for all creative elements, so along with the actual stories (Ray always has "final pencil" on drafts, which varies between a tweak to a major rewrite) he participated in casting, editing, music, locations, wardrobe, props, special effects – pretty much anything of any on-screen significance goes through the showrunner. I averaged somewhere between a 65 to 70 hour work week during production. I'd estimate Ray never put in anything less than 90 hours and would often hit triple-digits. Sleep deprivation, caffeine addiction and weight gain from too many trips to craft services are part of the job description of working in any story department.
On with the show. "The Hold" was never actually intended as a season opener, but after inclement weather forced production into an unscheduled hiatus, it ended up being the first episode out of the gate. Besides moving the production into a studio in Burnaby (Squamish continued to serve as "Port Hallet") the other big change came with Sonya Salomaa assuming the role of Laura. Sonya's a gifted actress who brings an infectious energy both on and off camera. At the time of writing this, she's up for a Gemini for her work on Durham County.
Despite the various changes the episode went through, one thing that never varied was the main story being built around human trafficking. That said it was never intended to be revealed as an episode about human trafficking until the very end. Instead the references to "cargo" were supposed to conjure up images of drug smugglers, but as often is the case, things change during the editing process and the reveal as to what was really in the hold was moved a fair bit earlier in the episode. The idea of being trapped was also always the thematic glue that held the two main stories together. The women are trapped in the fishing boat while Laura feels trapped in her relationships with David.
During early drafts, a substantial amount of focus was given to the gun debate. The American Coast Guard is a branch of the military and as such is heavily armed. The Canadian Coast Guard doesn't carry weapons, but there's currently a debate whether or not to change that – park rangers for example pack heat. Ultimately it felt like it was turning into an "issue" episode so the gun debate was scaled back. But while our Canadian Coasties aren't armed, they'll still use force when need be, as demonstrated by Andrew head-butting Orin in the water, which was inspired by an actual story told to us by one of our Coast Guard consultants.
Along with talking to members of the Coast Guard, research and old fashion making stuff up, here's another way story ideas sometimes comes about. In the episode Wendell tells Carly that she loves him but Carly doesn't say it back. Instead she later asks Wendell to move in with her, which is essentially Carly's way of saying "I love you." Makes sense in terms of Carly's character. But that choice was inspired as much as anything by the fact that the exterior of Wendell's cabin was a difficult, time-consuming and not altogether safe location to shoot and the interior was cramped and limiting. We needed a home for him that was a more film friendly – so out with the offbeat and romantic and in with the efficient and practical. Come to think of it, all storylines you may not care for as much in subsequent episodes are there for that sort of reason… yeah, that's it. J'ai trouvé cela sur le blog du site de The Guard. En gros pour la partie concernant David et Laura. Laura se rencontre que sa relation avec David "va droit dans le mur". | |
